The power rating of the ship electrical equipment is limited by the temperature rise above the ambient air that cools the equipment.

The industry-standard ambient air temperature is 40°C. It can be higher, up to 65°C, in special places such as the ship boiler room uptake. The maximum permissible operating temperature depends on the class of insulation used in the equipment.

For example, a temperature rise of 80°C is permitted in equipment’s with class B insulation. In 40°C standard ambient air, it would have an operating temperature of 80°C + 40°C = 120°C. For some insulation’s, such as NomexTM, the allowable operating temperature can be up to 200°C.
The temperature rise is determined by the cooling medium and the surface area available for dissipating the internal power loss on ship system that heats the equipment body.

Common Aspects of Power Equipment

Air-cooled ship equipment dissipates the internal heat mostly by convection and radiation, and negligibly by conduction. For electrical equipment on ship normally operating around 100°C, the temperature rise above the ambient air is approximately given by:

ΔT˚C = K × (watts)0.8 (3.23)

where watts = power loss to be dissipated and K = constant for a given body.

A material must contain charged particles to be able to conduct electric current. In solids, the current is carried by electrons. Copper, lead, aluminium, iron and carbon are some examples of solid conductors. In liquids and gases, the current is carried by the part of a molecule which has acquired an electric charge, called ions. These can possess a positive or negative charge, and examples include hydrogen ion H+, copper ion Cu++ and hydroxyl ion OH. Distilled water contains no ions and is a poor conductor of electricity, whereas salt water contains ions and is a fairly good conductor of electricity. Electrolysis is the decomposition of a liquid compound by the passage of electric current through it. Practical applications of electrolysis include the electroplating of metals, the refining of copper and the extraction of aluminium from its ore.An electrolyte is a compound which will undergo electrolysis. Examples include salt water, copper sulphate and sulphuric acid. The electrodes are the two conductors carrying current to the electrolyte. The positive-connected electrodeis called the anode and the negative-connected electrode the cathode.

When two copper wires connected to a battery are placed in a beaker containing a salt water solution, current will flow through the solution. Air bubbles appear around the wires as the water is changed into hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis.
Electroplating uses the principle of electrolysis to apply a thin coat of one metal to another metal. Some practical applications include the tin-plating of steel, silver-plating of nickel alloys and chromium-plating of steel. If two copper electrodes connected to a battery are placed in a beaker containing copper sulphate as the electrolyte it is found that the cathode (i.e. the electrode connected to the negative terminal of the battery) gains copper whilst the anode loses copper.

Dry-type transformers are a part of most electrical installations. They range in size from small doorbell transformers to three-phase 25-kVA units installed in electrical closets to large, free standing units rated at several hundred kVA. Electro tehnical Officers on ship must know how to test for and diagnose problems that develop in transformers especially in the smaller, dry- type power-supply or control transformers.

Open Circuit problem on ship transformer

If one of the windings in a transformer develops a break or “open” condition, no current can flow and therefore, the transformer will not deliver any output.

The symptom of an open-circuited transformer is that the circuits, which derive power from the transformer, are de-energized or “dead.”

Use an AC voltmeter or DMM to check across the transformer output terminals.

A reading of 0 V indicates an open circuit.

Then take a voltage reading across the input terminals. If voltage is present, this indicates that one of the transformer windings is open. However, if there is no voltage reading on the input terminals either, then the open must be somewhere else on the line side of the circuit; possibly a disconnect switch is open.

WARNING!

Make absolutely certain that your testing instruments are designed for the job and are calibrated for the correct voltage. Never test the primary side of any transformer over 600 V unless you are qualified, have the correct high-voltage testing instruments, and the test is made under the proper supervision.

However, if voltage is present on the line or primary side and no voltage is on the secondary or load side, open the switch to de-energize the circuit, and place a warning tag (tag-out and lock) on this switch so that it is not inadvertently closed again while someone is working on the circuit.

Check ships transformers condition

Disconnect all of the transformer primary and secondary leads and check each winding in the transformer for continuity (a continuous circuit), as indicated by a resistance reading taken with an ohmmeter.

Continuity is indicated by a relatively low resistance reading on control transformers, while an open winding will be indicated by an infinite resistance reading (OL or 1). In most cases, such small transformers will have to be replaced, unless of course the break is accessible and can be repaired.
